Counselling: More Than a Quick Fix – It’s a Journey

Whether you’re just exploring the idea of counselling or already on your journey, I wanted to share a little something that often comes up in conversations with new clients or those curious about starting therapy.
We live in a world of quick fixes with next-day delivery, fast answers, instant results. And sometimes, understandably, we bring that same expectation into therapy. It's easy to hope that after a few sessions, everything will feel "sorted." I completely get it – when you’re carrying something heavy, the natural thing to want is relief. And you will find relief. But therapy? It’s not a straight road, and it’s rarely quick.
Counselling is a process, not because I say so, but because you’re a whole person, with a whole story. And stories take time to tell, to understand, and to reshape. As a person-centred counsellor, I believe deeply in meeting you where you are. I often use the analogy of a car ride – you’re in the driver’s seat. You choose the route, the speed, the stops. I’m in the passenger seat, map in hand, ready to guide when you need it. I’m here to offer a safe, non-judgemental space to explore whatever you bring. But I’m not here to take over the wheel or tell you where to go. This is your journey.
Sometimes, we’ll cruise along. Other times, we’ll hit bumps or take unexpected detours. And that’s all okay. In fact, those detours often lead to the most meaningful insights. Progress might not always look linear, it rarely does. But with patience, honesty, and trust in the process, change does happen.
Committing to counselling is really about committing to yourself – to giving yourself the time, care and attention you deserve. It’s about showing up, even when it’s tough. Especially when it’s tough.
If you’re thinking about starting therapy, or if you’re in it and feeling like “shouldn’t I be further along by now?”, I want to reassure you – you’re not behind. You’re exactly where you need to be. And I’ll be right here, alongside you, for as long as you need.
So take a breath, give yourself credit for even considering this work – because it is work – and know that you’re not alone. If you're ready to begin, or even just curious about what counselling might look like for you, — I offer counselling in Basingstoke and would love to hear from you. 💬
