Common Myths About Therapy Debunked

If you’re thinking about starting therapy, chances are you’ve heard a few myths about it. There’s a lot of misinformation out there that might make you hesitate, or even feel unsure about seeking help. Well, I’m here to set the record straight!

As a counsellor, my mission is to make therapy accessible and approachable for everyone. I want to reassure you that there’s no “right” way to feel when it comes to mental health, and seeking help is a brave and positive step. In fact, it’s often the best way forward for both your emotional and mental wellbeing.

Let’s tackle some of the common myths I hear from people considering counselling:

1. Myth: "Therapy is only for people with serious problems."

Truth: Therapy is for everyone, no matter where you are on your mental health journey.

You don’t need to wait until things get bad or overwhelming before reaching out for support. Therapy can be incredibly helpful for anyone, whether you’re dealing with anxiety, stress, relationship issues, or even just feeling a bit “stuck.” You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from speaking with a counsellor. It’s about having someone in your corner to help you understand yourself better, set goals, and work through any challenges you may be facing.

2. Myth: "Therapy is just talking; it doesn’t actually help."

Truth: Talking therapy is a powerful tool for understanding and change.

At its core, therapy is about creating a safe space to talk openly without fear of judgement. But it’s not just about chatting – it’s about gaining insights into your thoughts, behaviours, and emotions. Together, we explore patterns, identify what’s working (and what’s not), and develop practical strategies for improving your mental health. This reflective process leads to real, lasting change.

3. Myth: "Therapy takes years to work."

Truth: Therapy doesn’t have to be a long-term commitment to see benefits.

Many people worry they’ll be in therapy for years before they feel any relief, but the length of therapy is entirely up to you. While some individuals benefit from long-term counselling, many people experience positive changes after just a few sessions. Therapy is tailored to your needs, so whether you want a few sessions to help you through a specific issue or longer-term support, we can work together to find the right pace for you.

4. Myth: "Only ‘weak’ people need therapy."

Truth: Seeking therapy takes strength and courage.

There’s no shame in asking for help. In fact, it’s often one of the bravest and most empowering things you can do. Society has made us think that needing support is a sign of weakness, but nothing could be further from the truth. Therapy is about taking ownership of your mental wellbeing and making positive changes in your life. It’s an act of self-care, not weakness.

5. Myth: "Therapists will tell me what to do."

Truth: Therapy is a collaborative process, not a directive one.

I’m not here to tell you how to live your life. Instead, my role as a counsellor is to offer you guidance and support as you work through your feelings and decisions. I help you explore your thoughts and emotions, and together, we’ll uncover strategies that feel right for you. You’re the expert on your own life, and I’m here to guide you through the process with empathy and understanding.

6. Myth: "Therapy is too expensive for me."

Truth: Therapy can be more affordable than you think.

Many people assume therapy is out of reach financially, but there are various options available to suit different budgets. I offer a variety of pricing options to make counselling as accessible as possible. If you’re concerned about cost, don’t hesitate to get in touch, and we can discuss what might work best for you.

7. Myth: "Therapy will be uncomfortable or intimidating."

Truth: Therapy should be a safe, comfortable space for you.

It’s normal to feel nervous before starting therapy, especially if it’s your first time, but the counselling process is designed to make you feel safe and supported. My approach is warm, compassionate, and down-to-earth. Together, we’ll work at a pace that feels right for you, and I’ll always ensure that you feel comfortable and heard throughout our sessions.
